We’re Going Down With This Ship (In Depp We Trust)

Hi everyone! This is going to be a SPECIAL. GUEST. BLOG. POST. of super importance. My friend Nikkos from Raiders of the Best Art is here to give us his insight to the history of one special actor. Raiders is one of my favorite art blogs, bringing new insight and art history from comic books to the Ancient Greeks. (Read this ‘Iconic Sherlock Holmes’ for proof of his excellence.) Read on, because this is about Johnny Depp with just a tad mention of one thrilling video game. Read the rest to see!

One of my favorite movie series is Pirates of the Caribbean. When I first watched it back in 2003, I went purely as a fan of adventure movies, and as a Johnny Depp fan (after having been impressed by Blow and From Hell). What I didn’t expect was his Magnum Opus! As Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp proved his range of acting—an act that is similar to a live stage performance, except on the big screen.

In Edward Scissorhands, you could see the potential Depp had to take what should be a “silly” role and give some credibility to the character. Although Edward Scissorhands was poorly directed (sorry Tim Burton fans), Depp went on to do movies like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco, The Ninth Gate, Sleepy Hollow (a thumbs up to Tim Burton for this one), Blow, and From Hell.

Thirteen years after Edward Scissorhands, Depp appeared in the first Pirates movie, and although supported by a great cast, he steals the show as Jack Sparrow. I think Disney execs even told him to tone down his performance, but Depp insisted he play the character the way he wanted.

So anyway, after the first trilogy, I wasn’t expecting much from the fourth Pirates movie, On Stranger Tides. But it was amazing. Yeah, it was so amazing as the original trilogy that I couldn’t wait for the next one. That was back in 2011.

Recently, when I finally decided to Google when the next Pirates is coming out, I found out that it won’t be until 2016. What? Apparently, there’s been script issues and stuff, so there’s a delay, as noted by the Hollywood Reporter.

What do I think of the waiting? In one word: Boo.

I felt disappointed that I have to wait so long. Part of me hoped that I’d be nicely surprised to find out the next Pirates movie was coming out this Christmas season. And what with the next installment of Assassin’s Creed coming out for the PlayStation 4, devoted completely to a pirate assassin, I thought it would be the perfect pairing for me (during Christmas) to see Johnny Depp in another Pirates of the Caribbean and then play Assassin’s Creed Black Flag for days afterwards.

3333Instead, I’m forced to bide the time—three long years—until Captain Jack Sparrow returns. So much for my pirate-themed holiday plans.

Maybe someone will be nice enough to get me the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag game for Christmas, but as for my holiday excursion to go see a Pirates movie, I’ll have to settle for an evening with my relatives drinking eggnog instead.
